Euphoria at Backwaters 2007

Harris

The 14th of Jan was the day Euphoria were to perform at the IIM-K for BACKWATERS 2007. Having performed a year or 2 ago at NIT-K to a packed house and having wowed the audiences there, we expected a major turnout. But sadly, there were just 500 ppl at best. The organizers did hardly anything to publicize the event. Which was sad, coz a band of this stature deserves a big crowd and vice versa. A good band needs to feed off the energy raised by the crowd to perform to even greater heights.

But all said and done, Euphoria delivered a rocking performance for a solid 3 hours and that too, non-stop. Palash's energy n stamina are to be seen to be believed!

The band has become HUGE now. Since the last time I saw them, 3-4 members more have been added. There were 3-4 new backing female vocalists.

The band has now taken to dressing up in white entirely for all shows. The band started off with a song from their first album Dhoom. Then went on to sing a host of their hits, including, Pal, Maa, Galli, Soniye, Maeree and so on. They also sang Om Shanti Om, Vande Mataram, Dil Se, Dil Chahta hai, Beedi, Pathshala, Damadum Mastkalandar etc. They did some English numbers too. The notable among them were Summer of 69, Its my life, Come together, Smoke on the water, We will rock you etc. The use of tables and dholaks in some English numbers, especially Summer of 69 was outstanding.

The band was tight as a whistle and cud, to use an oft used phrase, turn on a dime! They cud stop at will, seamlessly change songs in the middle, switch from hindi 2 english without a hiccup and come back again. The backing vocals, though must have added a big burden on the organizers by way of flight tickets, did make the overall sound much better. The new guitarist was excellent. He can walk into most of the rock bands in India now. The drummer was also superb on the skins. The bass work and DJ's showmanship was top drawer stuff. Sadly, the keyboardist was all show and minimal playing. One gets the feeling, that most of his stuff was programmed/sequenced on the keyboard. But there again, his showmanship was top class. He has probably traded off his playing for showmanship. The Indian percussion players were also superb. One could c them doing the backing vocal duties on many English numbers too.

An excellent band, great front man with loads of stamina, excellent backing vocals, great lead, excellent bass, superb drummer, fantastic Indian percussionists. Palash's showmanship, his vocal range and his banter with the crowd (what little there was!) was awesome.

I must mention that the sounds which were sounding not so hot 4 Motherjane sounded fabulous for Euphoria. I went and checked out the console table and saw a new person there. I asked an was told that it was Vikram Mishra. For those of u who read RSJ, his wud b a familiar name. He mans the controls for Parikrama regularly. He did a fantastic job on the console and showed us all y and how a good sound engineer makes the all-important difference.

A word of caution here. I have seen them in action a year or a couple ago and the English song list remained the same. Those of us who went for the show had a great time. I really feel sad n sorry for the rest of Calicut. The venue was excellent, the IIM-K campus is a treat. Great band, a nice drive to the venue, 150 for the tkt.. what more can u ask for?
