Review - DO(aw)N 2007 - New Year's Eve bash at Cosmopolitan Club, Calicut
Dr. Biju Raju
DO(AW)N 007 - 31st December 2006 at Cosmopolitan club was a cracking new-years eve for all. Though there was a huge rush at the Calicut beach road because of Id, the turnout was very good. What prompted me, a rockin' retinal surgeon from Cochin to be at Calicut for new year celebrations was that DO(AW)N 2007 was also the occasion where band members of 13 AD, one of the top bands in the country were meeting up to entertain music lovers. George "KOOL" Peter, lead vocalist of 13 AD fame and Pinson correia, the oldest rockin' drummer in the country, also of 13 AD were performing together after a decade. To top it all, there was Keith Peters, the best bassist in this part of the world along with Jose on the lead guitar. Danny Jacob and Vimal Krishna played the keyboards for the show.

I reached Cosmo club at 7.20 PM after driving at snails pace navigating carefully through the sea of people celebrating on the streets of calicut. Apparently the sound and light personnel also arrived late because of the traffic congestion. George Peter, using all his experience working with A. R. Rahman, made the sound check look so easy. The sound check ended with a "sample vedikettu" (as described by Vinod, the master of ceremony) - I shot the sheriff.
Then followed the new year gifts and competition for everyone. The kids had a gala time and Vinod, spontaneous in his approach, kept everyone involved in the proceedings. Advocate Narayan Namboothiri from Cochin and Advocate Sasi took over for about half an hour, to entertain us with rocking malayalam numbers like Chembakame, Confusion theerkaname etc., Next came the teenage sensation, Kavya Ajith. I am told she is ready to give her 10th standard SSLC exams in March 007. She took the stage by storm and the whole crowd rocked with her as she sang Kannum Kannum nokia. She also played well on the violin. By now we were all up and ready for the big boys. All the best to Kavya for her exams.
The band started off with a ballad from Elton John - Sacrifice. What followed was a feast of good ol' rock 'n pop numbers like Smoke on the water, and Labamba. George peter made sure that the crowd got themselves involved in most of the songs especially Summer of 69 and buffallo soldiers. Sultans of Swing, my favorite from Direstraits, failed to impress me. The guitar amp had a technical snag and we could not hear the solo properly. But it was made up by a breathtaking solo on the bass by Keith. Seemed as though the bass guitar is an extension of his own body and he was amazing. Jose did a good job on Clapton numbers like lay down sally and wonderful t’nite. George also did a few hindi numbers which he had done with AR. Needless to say, everyone was on the dance floor and singing along with this crowd puller.

Believe me…Pinson has not lost his magical touch! I am an ardent fan of 13 AD and used to watch them play in Cochin way back in the early 90s. He is still the same cool and composed drummer with a great sense of rhythm. He did a couple of drum solos – Awesome!!! The drum work on Santana’s black magic woman was mind blowing! In Lambada the use of the cowbell was very innovative and sounded refreshingly different. I was so happy that he and George recognized me after so many years.
Danny proved that his back up vocals are as good as his keyboard skills. Red red wine sounded very nice with him backing George's vocals. Vimal did a good job too. 2007 Dawned with the final countdown. The guitar lead solo was very nicely done and sounded good. Then followed few more songs like BMW - yeah, that's what they call Santana's black magic woman. But it was a premature end to the concert. There was an unruly mob outside the club and the organizers had to call the police to move them off the premises. Overall it was a great evening - good crowd, good food and great music. The evening brought back old memories. Did feel sad that 13 AD had to break up. But now there is hope that the band probably will reunite and if that happens, then it is gonna be a rockin' time for all of us. I must congratulate the members of the Cosmo club especially Harris and Shyam for making DO(AW)N 007 a memorable experience.
