Much has been written about the Pubs of B’lore. So I sure hope most of u wont turn away thinking… oh no… not another one of the B’lore Pub write-ups! But, like the cliché` goes, this is a B’lore pub write-up with a difference! Making Waves decided to take a tour of the pubs that rock, literally and figuratively. We eschewed all the tourist attraction pubs and decided to look in on the pubs that catered exclusively to rock music lovers. We picked the Saturday, the 16th of December 2006 for this rocking ride. Honor thy Anthem - Srinath Girish waxes patriotic in an article of general interest
The movie was coming to an end. The hero gazed deep into the heroine's eyes and their faces moved closer. Suddenly their countenances were replaced by two swaying roses in black and white. The audience began stirring in their seats. After the words "The End" flashed on the screen, there was no mad scramble for the exits. Everyone just stood up and waited. Soon enough, the waving National Flag flashed on the screen and the strains of "Jana Gana Mana.." began to fill the hall. The crowd snapped to attention, many singing the works out loud. The girl was halfway through the song (and singing it well too) before I realized that she was singing a song in ENGLISH.
For years – throughout my entire school years, in fact – I thought that Indians were supposed to sing only Indian songs in public. It was not something anyone had told me, just something I assumed to be. English songs were those sung by bizarre- looking (mostly white-skinned) individuals on the jackets of LPs, with nice-sounding strange names. Nice boys from good families didn’t listen to such songs, much less sing them...Read article
