The pick of the show, according to me, was Smooth, by Santana. My word, the guitar tones, the vocals, the backing vox, drums et al were note perfect. Perfect Strangers, I shot the Sheriff, Come as you are, Still Got the blues, Jump etc were all covered with class. One really couldn't complain on the performance.
But, if I must pick flaws, I would pick it on their lack of a stage show and the song selection. For example, the 2nd and 3rd songs sounded too similar to be played one after the other. The lack of at least one GNR number in their repertoire is a sore point.
Some of the songs like Lynyrd Skynyrd etc, well, it is really the band's duty to talk about the lesser known songs and present them in such a way that the audience goes back n checks out the original.
But to their credit, the band dressed well for the show. Gladson's camouflage trousers really stood out. I must also make a special mention of the excellent harmonies by Aussy, the bass guitarist, who is also one hell of a mean bassist with his Samick. His bass solo at the end of Jump was a class act. His bass work on the band's originals too are really something.
Personally I would prefer Gladson to move forward and take centre stage during the leads. Come on, the lead guitarist is the star of any band. But having said that, I must say that his fretwork in Sultans of Swing, Gary Moore and Santana were top drawer stuff!
The most impressive thing about Lennoy is his totally "un-mallu" diction. His diction very much suits their type of music!!!. His fine vocal control and enunciation were really cool. If only he could improve his interaction with the crowd, he can really be up there with the best. He really needs to take the crowd in hand, make them ask for songs which he is anyhow ready with etc. There was a bass solo just after the song Jump.
Their Keys was another vocalist that rocked Big time. Ebby Verghese the Keyboard whiz who also did vocal duties on some of the classic rock numbers was also really good. But it was either the mixing or his throat, some of it sounded a bit muffled.Later Gladson told me that he had a bad throat n was on medication. But doing both is really hard work and this guy made it look like a piece of cake!.
Must say that they have a real winner in their band in Jerry Peter, the drummer. The amount of hardware he displayed on his drumkit was awesome! The Santana percussions were spot on. Cowbells n tubas (am i right there?) and what not. Not to mention the double pedal work which was goin at machine gun tempo on some songs. He did a deadly solo which was far out. One of the best drummers I have seen in recent times, if not the best. The communication that takes place between these guys on stage while playin stuff like Fireball etc was amazing! Guess 12+ years of experience must count for something, huh?
Not to forget the crowd. It was a totally shy crowd at first. But after a couple of songs and some minimal cajoling by Lenoy, requests started trickling in. The crowd where all commenting on the tightness of the band. Watch out for EXODUS's new album folks!
