We did a program with Dr.Shakeel, the famous ghazal singer, who is also a tutor in medicine at teh Calicut Govt. Medical College on 30-07-04. It was at the Beach Hotel as a apart of our monthly family music scene. This one was a mehfil set up with Dr. Shakeel on the harmonium, Roshan on tabla and Pramod Shenoy on guitar. An excellent program. He sang many ghazalas by Mehdi Hassan, Ghulam Ali. He even sang a couple of old malayalam film songs, rendered in ghazal style and a few Rafi, Kishore and Mukesh songs too, in a similiar vein. an excellent singer, very gifted, a great performance, very well backed. a small token of appreciation was presented to him through Dr.Muralidharan Namboothiri, Professor of ENT at the Medical College, Calicut. He has sung along with the great Mehdi Hassan himself on stage. This velvet voiced singer has had the fortune of meeting the one and only Mohammed Rafi in person and being blessed by him at a very tender age. The great malayalam composer Baburaj was a regular visitor at his home. He says that from the time he can remember his house was full of music and musicians. He has certain plans of musical therapy in treating patients.
