Inferno @Cherooty Nagar Swimming Pool - A rocking show

Sikanth G.

Was fortunate to be hanging around in Calicut on the 5th of Jan to experience a fresh new young band Inferno. Bunch of 15 to 16 year old kids, but with an attitude, which I haven’t seen with even experienced bands that have been around for a long time in recent times. Especially being their first public show.

The venue being the cherooty nagar swimming pool, which has seen a lot of bands perform including George Peter and the renegades and a lot of other class acts, but these guys were different especially being so young and full of energy. I got there early while they were just about do the sound check and was greeted by a legend in the music circles as far as I and many others are concerned, the person was none other than Ashraf AKA Ash, the drummer and vocalist of Axe Wagon who happens to be the bands drummer’s father.

They started the sound check with a song that I never expected any band that age could perform and that happened to be Highway star by deep purple, sounded nice and tight though the lead guitarist seemed to be a little nervous and missed a few notes but got right back on track in a jiffy. Sounded perfect so I left with a friend for a very important appointment on Mavoor Road and came back just in time, but the crowd was very less. All of them standing away from the stage, which was quite well lit.

They started of with one of my fav bands from the 90s, Green Day, boulevard of broken dreams, which I’m sure everyone has heard and then went on to play Nothing else matters by metallica, which has been an all time favourite song of metallica for most people and of course went on to play two songs of the band that I know any rock fan in Calicut or for that matter India always heard or would love to hear bands playing, Deep Purple, the songs Highway Star, which they played perfectly.

Jashi, the lead guitarist and Rohit on the keys really belted out their solos in full perfection and Perfect strangers by which time I expected the crowd going wild. Obviously I was right in front of the stage head banging and basically going nuts seeing these kids really letting it loose. I looked back and realized that it was just me and my two friends, the rest of the crowd were at least 20 feet away standing and watching as if it were a Jagjeet Singh show, Sachin, the lead vocalist, the front man, in every sense, did was doing an awesome job, been a long time since I saw some attitude from a vocalist from Kerala.

I came to know that he strained his voice box so much that just a few hours before the show, he lost his voice completely and had to be taken to hospital and got some injection and came directly to the venue, now that’s a real hardcore rocker wont you say?

The crowd involvement was really pathetic, apart from the claps at the end of each song. It was then that the band started playing songs like Hotel California, summer of 69, and sultans of swing that the crowd started moving in. The song they played next was a song that really hit me like a freight train, which never in my wildest dreams did I expect them to play which was Chopsuey by a band called System of a down, which was when I really felt the power of the band. This particular song kind of has all genres of rock in it, which is quite a challenge to play, Darvish, the drummer really let loose and thrashed his drums like nobody’s business and of course Athul, the most unassuming band member was upfront punishing his bass guitar.

They really meant business from then, by playing songs by Megadeth, G N R, Nirvana etc. Nice to see that rock is still very much alive and kicking in Calicut with young talent like Inferno. The one who is responsible for all this Harris, without whom nothing of this would have happened for all these years. Keep it happening and LONG LIVE ROCK IN CALICUT!
